Since its humble beginnings in 2007, Mascara has been a journal that has pioneered a more inclusive literary culture in Australian and in diaspora literature. We’ve managed to grow as well as mentor many emerging writers and editors without enjoying the benefit of sustained institutional support. We are proud to have published over 1400 essays, poems, fiction, non-fiction and translations from both emerging and established writers and critics.

Our past and current editors have curated the groundbreaking Contemporary Asian Australian Poets,(2013) and Resilience a celebration of fifteen years of Mascara (2022). In 2026 we will be bringing you an anthology of disability writing curated by Beau Windon, Laura Pettenuzzo, Misbah Wolf and Katie Hansord, forthcoming with NewSouth Publishing.

Our literary criticism has empowered diverse critics and engaged with books and writers, some of whom don’t receive a mainstream critical reception. Thanks to our partners and grant funding we have been able to platform underrepresented voices through events, residencies, prizes and advocacy.

While the journal’s work has never been more necessary, with limited and unpredictable funding in the arts and with the increased costs associated with publishing and branding a quality literary journal we have had to slow down our programming.

For this reason, we invite you to support us by subscribing or donating to Mascara so that we can continue to publish exceptional writing, offer support to underrepresented writers, foster creative and critical dialogues, and pay our contributing writers what they deserve.
